Google Business Profiles Update: Changes to Website Creation

Melody Jaimon • January 15, 2024

Google announced the discontinuation of website creation through Google Business Profiles. As of March 1, 2024, existing websites built using this tool will be deactivated, and will only redirect to your Google Business Profile until June 10, 2024. After that date, attempting to access these websites will lead to a "page not found" error.

If your website is hosted on domains ending with 'business.site' or 'negocio.site', note that these domains will be removed from the website field on your Business Profile.

While the website itself will be redirected to the Business Profile, other aspects of your Business Profile remain unaffected. Your profile, including its information and reviews, will continue to be visible and accessible to customers. If you don't currently have a website created through Google Business Profile, these alterations won't impact you.

The Impact on Businesses

For years, Google provided a convenient, free website builder as an extension of its Business Profile service. This allowed businesses, especially small ventures, to swiftly create and manage a simple website in minutes, both on desktop and mobile platforms. The tool served as a stepping stone for those without the resources to craft a proper website.

The decision to discontinue the creation and support for websites through Google Business Profiles sparks concerns for the entrepreneurs and small business owners reliant on this accessible tool. In an era where online visibility profoundly influences consumer behaviour, not having a website could potentially spell disaster.

However, amidst this shift, there emerges an opportunity for businesses to reassess their digital strategies. It also encourages a reevaluation of online presence and marketing tactics.

Steps to Transition Smoothly:

To maintain an online presence for your business beyond this date, it's essential to take action.

 Here's what you can do:

Update Your Business Profile

Log in to your Google Business Profile and ensure that the website field points to a new, functional website. This ensures a seamless transition for potential customers redirected from the previous website.

Manage Ads Campaigns

If you're running Ads campaigns linked to your current website, ensure to update these links before March 1, 2024. Alternatively, pause the campaigns to avoid redirection issues.

Handling Third-Party Domains

For those using custom domain names that redirect to your Google Business Profile website, these redirects will also cease after June 10, 2024. To avoid disruptions, log in to your hosting company account and redirect your domain to the new website before this deadline.

Consider Alternative Solutions

Explore other website hosting options beyond Google Business Profiles. Evaluate platforms that align with your business needs and create a robust online presence.

Moving Forward: Navigating the Change

Investing in a comprehensive website optimised for Google and tailored to their needs and audience becomes imperative. While the Google Business Profile-based websites may have served as a starting point, the next step involves transitioning to more robust web solutions that offer enhanced functionality and visibility.
