Containers and Flexboxes (1.0)

Melody Jaimon • December 6, 2022

When adding widgets and design components in Flex, you can utilise Containers and Flexboxes. However, there are some significant differences between them. The following contains information and examples on when to utilise a Container or a Flexbox, and when to add elements directly to the grid.

As a general rule, use a
Flexbox if you want an automated layout that includes ordering items in a horizontal or vertical list. Use a Container to create a freestyle composition with overlapping elements.

Grid

The grid is the base layer that determines your section's rows and columns, which include containers and flexboxes. When you want items to overlap relative to a card or composition, place them directly on the grid. For example, you can include On Sale labels, fascinating titles, and so on.

To create a genuinely responsive design, we suggest using the grid's rules to snap items into position rather than arranging items on the grid in a freestyle manner. You can use the alignment buttons in the design panel to snap items into place as you drag and drop them into the grid.

Containers

Containers are ideal for free-form compositions. Use containers to incorporate overlapping items or non-linear compositions.

Flexbox

When you want to create an automatic layout that includes arranging items in a horizontal or vertical list, use a Flexbox. Additionally, when you have items that you wish to be placed one after the other, you should add elements to a Flexbox (for example, multiple CTAs, labels, logos, and so on).
