Discount Coupons

Melody Jaimon • August 3, 2022

You can use coupon codes to get discounts in your store. A discount coupon code is a code that a customer can use when making a purchase to get a discount. They are used to boost sales.

Store owners issue discount coupon codes, which can be distributed in any way the provider deems appropriate (for example, through mail, site news, or advertisements on other sites).

Coupons are only available for paid eCommerce accounts.

Create Discount Coupons

To create coupon discounts:

  1. Click eCommerce in the left side, then click Manage Store.
  2. Select Marketing, and then click Discount Coupons.
  3. Click + Add a New Coupon.
  4. Fill out the required information and click Save.

Coupon Options

When creating a coupon, the following options are available:

  • Name. Add a name on the coupon for your convenience. Only the store owner can view it.
  • Code. Click the generate button to generate a random code. Alternatively, you can enter your own code (for example, summersale_coupon).

The code is not case-sensitive.

To receive a discount, your customers will use a code. The discount can be in the form of:

  • Free shipping
  • Absolute discount (for example, $5 off)
  • Percent discount (for example, 10% off)

Coupon Limits

To configure the coupon's limits, click the limits link. You can choose from the following options:

  • Orders
  • all orders. The coupon will be used on all orders, no matter how much they cost.
  • subtotal over amount. The coupon will only be used on orders that cost more than a specified amount.

  • Number of Uses:
  • Unlimited. No limits. Each customer can use the coupon many times.
  • Once per customer.  Each customer can only use a coupon once per email, however the coupon can be used several times. With this deal, a customer may place two orders by giving two different email addresses.
  • Single use. The coupon can only be used once.

  • Customers:
  • All. No limits on the types of customers.
  • Repeat customers only. Customers who are logged in to your store and have at least one paid order are eligible for the discount. You can send these coupons in the Order Confirmation emails as an incentive to come back and make another purchase.

  • Products and categories:
  • Choose Limit by Product or Limit by Category. Choose one or more products or categories for which the coupon can be used.

Click Apply.

FAQs

When is the Apply a coupon field shown on the cart page?

If your store has at least one coupon enabled, the Apply a coupon form is displayed on the cart page.

What does a coupon discount apply to?

Coupons are applied to the subtotal (sum of items prices for all items in this order without taxes). There is no discount on shipping costs. The aggregate discount cannot exceed the subtotal.

Can I make a gift card (gift certificate) in store?

A customer with a promotional code can avail a single-use discount coupon to receive a discount. Also, if you set a 100 percent discount for a coupon, a customer's order will be free, and you may use this to either attract new customers or reward regular ones..

  • Please note that discount coupons apply to the subtotal (the sum of all item prices in this order), not the shipping cost. Therefore, if you charge shipping to your customers, a gift card 100 percent coupon will not cover the cost of shipping.
  • If you decide to use a 100 percent discount, you will need to set the option to Skip payment method selection if the order total is zero to avoid receiving warning messages because most online payment gateways do not accept orders with a zero total.

What restrictions does Google Checkout place impose on discount coupons?

  1. There are two ways to add a discount code while using Google Checkout.
  2. The customer places a coupon in their cart and then proceeds to Google Checkout. In this situation, the discount will be displayed as a negative price item. On the Google Checkout page, it will be impossible to apply a new coupon. When you use a "free shipping" coupon, the new "Free Shipping (coupon: coupon code)" shipping method will be displayed.
  3. A customer applies a coupon code at Google Checkout page. Coupons can also be applied on the Google Checkout page (it has a special field for it). Only one coupon can be applied per order. When you use a "free shipping" coupon, the new "Free Shipping (coupon: coupon code)" shipping method will be displayed.
  4. When using Google Checkout, the "once per customer" limit cannot be checked, so a customer can place multiple orders with the "once per customer" coupon.
  5. Users in the UK can only do the following with Google Checkout:
  6. Merchants in the United Kingdom are currently unable to use the Merchant Calculations API to compute discounts or gift certificates.
  7. This implies that UK users can only apply coupons on the cart page and not on the Google Checkout page yet.

When a discount is more than or equal to the order total, my customers gets a warning that they cannot pay for a zero-total order. How can I fix it?

When a client attempts to pay using an online payment method for a zero-total order, this warning appears because most online payment gateways do not accept orders with a zero total. To resolve this, in the Store Control Panel, enable the Skip payment method selection if the order total is zero option.
