E-Goods or Digital Downloads

Melody Jaimon • August 19, 2022

The store enables you to offer downloadable digital or virtual items such as software, audio and video files (mp3), e-books, and so on.

About E-Goods

Customers can add digital products to their shopping carts and proceed to checkout the same way they would with physical products. After the order and process, Store sends the customer an email providing the download link. Additionally, the product can be downloaded from the order details.

Customers can add digital products to their shopping carts and proceed to checkout the same way they would with physical products. After the order and process, Store sends the customer an email providing the download link. Additionally, the product can be downloaded from the order details.

Only when the order is paid will the store send a notification with the download link.

How to Add a Digital Product

To add a digital product:

  1. Click eCommerce and then Manage Store on the left side.
  2. Click Catalogue, followed by Products.
  3. Click Edit Product next to a product.
  4. Select the Files tab.
  5. Upload the files that you would want to sell.

The customer will only have access to these files after purchasing this product.

  • For Standard stores, each file cannot exceed 100MB.
  • For Advanced stores, each file cannot exceed 1024MB.
  • For Unlimited stores, each file cannot exceed 10240MB.

However, multiple files per product can be uploaded.

Protect Download Links

To prevent customers from sharing a download link, you can limit the link's lifetime and the number of downloads they can perform.

To set these limitations:

  1. Click Settings inside the Store's Control Panel.
  2. Select General followed by Cart & Checkout.
  3. Continue to the E-goods section. Following are your options:
  • Duration of a link, in hours
  • Number of downloads

You can select either both options simultaneously or one of them. If the value of the option is empty, the corresponding limit is not applied.

Examples:

  • "link is available for 24 hours only, unlimited number of downloads"
  • "link is available without any time limits, however, customer can download it 5 times only"
  • "link is available for 48 hours and customer can download it 3 times only"

When required, the store administrator can manually regenerate or expire any download link on the Order details page. After regeneration, a new link will be generated and sent to the customer, allowing him/her to download the material once more. The link will become immediately unavailable for a customer after it has been forced to expire.

The Link lifetime and Number of download features are exclusive to Advanced or Unlimited Stores users. Download links for free users always have an unlimited lifetime and number of downloads.

FAQs

How can I make the email with download links more customised?

On the Settings Mail Customer notifications page, edit the Egoods download notification.

I'd want to provide free promotional E-Goods. Is it possible?

Yes. There are two approaches:

  1. Under the "Files" tab, you can make a product with zero price and add a file to it. A customer will be able to add this kind of product in their shopping cart, place an order, and get links to download it for free. We recommend that you turn on the Skip payment method selection if the order total is zero" option and have your store automatically set the "Accepted" status for such orders so that a customer can get the download link right after placing a free order. This will make things easier for you and your customers. Here's how to do it: What if the total of the order is zero? Can a customer skip payment methods selection?
  2. Rather than using the E-goods feature, you can attach a file to a product by adding a download link to the file in the product description. In this case, a visitor doesn't have to place an order; they can just download the file from the product page. Here’s how to do it:
  • Placed your file on any hosting service. If you don't have a cloud storage account, you can use Dropbox for free.
  • Using HTML editor, add a link to this file to the description of your product.

Does Store support download resume?

Yes, the Store allows you to resume your download. However, it only works if you don't restrict the number of downloads.

If you do not impose a limit on the number of downloads:

  • When a customer begins downloading your file
  • Then pauses the download
  • his or her browser will not download the entire file again after he/she resumes it; only the relevant parts will be downloaded.

If the number of downloads is limited:

  • The customer begins downloading your file
  • then pauses it
  • when he/she restarts it, his/her browser begins downloading the entire file again.

Are there any space and bandwidth limits?

No, Store doesn't limit how much space you can use to store e-goods or how many times you can download them. The only limit is that a single file can't be larger than 100MB on the Standard Store, 1GB on the Advanced Store, or 10GB on the Unlimited Store. There is also no limit on how many e-goods you can upload or how many people can download them, so you can sell as many as you need. But Website Builder has a Fair Usage Policy: we keep track of how server sources are used. We won't limit your storage or traffic as long as you're using Website Builder to sell your e-goods and don't have any bad intentions.
