Do you want to make passive income each month without needing to put in the extra effort each day like a normal job?

Do you already have a website that draws in consistent traffic each month and want to find more ways to monetise that traffic? No matter whether you're new to the process of selling ads or have done it before, there's always more you can learn.

Read on for expert advice on how to sell advertising space on your website and the best ways to get started!

Basic Requirements

In order for your website to attract advertisers who are interested in placing their ads on your site, you'll need to meet some basic requirements first.

Design

No matter what industry or niche your website and brand is in, you'll need to have a well-designed website that's attractive to both advertisers and regular viewers. Your website needs to be fast loading with responsive web design that works with both desktop computers, mobile phones, and tablets.

It needs to be well-structured and easy to navigate so that viewers don't need to click repeatedly to get to where they need to go, such as an About or Services page.

Lastly, it needs to be visually cohesive so that your brand's personality is clear after only a few seconds of viewing. This means making purposeful choices when it comes to typography, graphics, photographs, colour and structure.

Content

Next, your website needs digital content that's relevant for the demographic of viewers you're catering to. This means content's that valuable and entertaining to them as well as consistently posted. Remember that advertisers often won't advertise on platforms that feature prohibited content such as:

  • Gambling
  • Drugs
  • Pornography
  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Weapons
  • Violence

It's easier to focus on one specific niche than make a website that's a "jack of all trades" in every topic.

Traffic

Last but not least, your website needs to be pulling enough monthly traffic to be worthwhile for advertisers.

This builds naturally if you're focusing on producing quality, relevant content for your reviewers. Through SEO, the Google algorithm will recognise that your website is valuable and relevant and boost it higher on the search engine results pages (SERPs) that feature your commonly used keywords.

Advertisers have different traffic requirements. For Google AdSense, you need to be able to attract 250 unique users.

How to Sell Advertising Space

Once your website has all the basic requirements ready, you can begin the processing of selling advertising.

1. Affiliate Advertising

The easiest way to start getting ads on your site is to join an affiliate programme. This is also a great option if you don't want large ads on your website that can affect the look of your brand. This is because affiliate advertising only requires that you link to the advertiser's product.

Every time a person clicks on that link and makes a purchase, you receive a percentage of the sale. Different affiliate programmes have different payouts, and you also have the option of joining more than one affiliate programme to boost your sales.

Remember that it's important the links and products you're posing on your site are relevant to your niche and brand. It's also ethical to be familiar with and actually enjoy the products you're promoting in order to build trust with your customers.

2. Google AdSense

Your next option is targeting advertising through Google's AdSense programme. These are more like the ads you're familiar with. They're placed on your web pages either as banners along the sides of the page or on the bottom near the footer. You'll see "Ads by Google" near the top of these ads.

The ads come from businesses that pay for Google's AdWords programme and they'll be customised to match your website's niche. Unlike affiliate ads, you'll be paid each time a user clicks on the ad.

Although you'll be paid significantly less than with affiliate advertising, the likelihood that someone will click on your ads is much higher if you get a significant amount of traffic to your website each day.

These types of advertising programmes are also called programmatic advertising. This is because it's an automated process that uses sophisticated machine-learning in order to deliver targeted ads to your viewers.

The best part about this kind of advertising is you still have the ability to decide how many ads you want to display on your site as well as their formats.

3. Partnerships

Remember that you can also form partnerships with businesses on your own. This is especially beneficial if you have a website that focuses on a local area. For instance, if you're a dog walker with a dog walking website that receives a lot of traffic, you can contact locally owned pet shops and boutiques in your area.

This is usually done through a professionally-worded email to your business of choice. Remember to keep your email as succinct as possible and provide real data, such as your niche, the number of unique visitors you receive each day, and how you would place their ads on your website.

How to Sell Advertising Space: Experiment with Ad Types

When you're first considering the option to sell advertising on your site, you'll realise you have a wealth of options available to you. One of the most common mistakes people can make is to drown their viewers in advertisements until they no longer want to access your content.

Finding the right amount of relevant ads for your viewers is a delicate balancing act that can only come with practice. Consider your business needs and unique selling point and choose an ad programme that makes sense. Use a variety of affiliate and programmatic ads, or consider forming a few strong partnerships with local companies.
