Progressive Web App (PWA)

Melody Jaimon • January 9, 2023

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a web application that allows you to provide a native app-like experience to mobile users, allowing them to interact with your site in a fast, smooth, and engaging manner.

PWAs load quickly, respond quickly to user interactions and have the appearance of a native app. They do not require installation from an app store and allow users to re-enter the site instantly, even when the device is offline.

  • PWAs are only available on HTTPS sites. See Add SSL or HTTPS for more information.
  • Chrome for Android now supports PWAs. If PWA is enabled, the browser will prompt the user to add the site to their home screen.
  • PWA can also be added to iOS devices running version 11.3. However, because the browser's "add to screen" automatic message is not yet available, users will have to manually add PWA. Visit Apple Support for more information on how to do this.

To activate the PWA feature:

  1. Click Settings in the left panel, then Progressive Web App (PWA).
  2. Toggle the Activate Progressive Web App checkbox. After enabling PWA for a site, you can configure the following settings:

  • Name. This is the name that appears on the splash screen as well as the "Add to home screen" message. It can have up to 60 characters.
  • Short Name. This is the name that is used when there isn't enough space to display the full name, such as on a mobile home screen. This name can have up to 60 characters, but we recommend keeping it as short as possible.
  • Icon. When the app is loading, this is the icon that appears on the mobile home screen and the splash screen. It must have a minimum width of 192 pixels and be in.png format.
  • Splash screen background colour. This is the colour that appears as the website loads.

When a user accesses a PWA-enabled site from their mobile device, an Add to Home Screen button appears below the site. The icon will be displayed on their device for quick access to the site once added to the home screen (similar to an app).

Even if the device is offline, the user can now re-enter the site using this icon.
