Import Blog Posts from RSS Feeds

Melody Jaimon • Dec 08, 2022

Blog postings can be imported from an RSS feed. All blog posts are imported but only the supported elements are included in each blog post. This includes text (H1/H2/H3, paragraph), images, videos (Youtube/Vimeo), HTML elements, dividers, and Disqus comments, as well as post author and post date. Following the import, the imported posts are in draft status until the site owner publishes them.

Warning:

If the old blog post is deleted, the images that were imported from it are also deleted.

To import blog posts from an RSS feed, follow these steps:

  1. Click Blog on the left side, then Import Posts.
  2. Enter a valid RSS feed URL in the given space and click Import posts. See Requirements for Valid RSS Feeds for further details.
  3. You will be notified when the import is complete (you will also be notified if it fails). If it fails, the entire process fails, not just the problematic post. The failure notice will provide details about what went wrong).
  4. (Optional) Examine the imported posts.
  5. Publish each imported post.

Requirements for Valid RSS Feeds

  • The URL for the RSS feed must be in a valid URL format.
  • Non-supported characters, such as EN characters, numbers, and support special characters, are not permitted in the post URL (only ASCII characters)
  • There are various methods to present your blog post's content. To establish a valid RSS feed, the entire content must be included rather than just a summary.
  • Your RSS contains no more than 300 posts.

Before importing, we recommend confirming your RSS feed. Check your RSS Feed at
https://validator.w3.org/feed/.

If the RSS feed does not import into the blog, there may be a problem with the RSS link you are using or with the RSS feed format. If the import fails, try to check on the following:

  • Make sure you're using the right URL for the import. The RSS link does not go to the blog page. This should be a link to the RSS feed for the blog. Most of the WordPress feed links look like this: www.example.com/blog/feed
  • The RSS file must have content.
  • The content is included within the <description> item. We are unable to import from feeds that contain description tags.
  • The important issue is that there is sometimes no access to the following page. For example, (https://xda-developers.com/feed) displays the most recent 10 posts, but if you go to the second page of the feed (https://xda-developers.com/feed?paged=2), it displays the same postings. This indicates that the feed is not successfully pulling posts and that it is not possible to import all posts.

Considerations

  • The process of creating an RSS feed differs depending on the platform. For further information, click on the following links:

  • Due to performance difficulties, the maximum amount of posts you may import through the RSS feed is 300. If your blog has more, you should limit the RSS accordingly.
  • Before the import procedure, your site is automatically backed up. If you restore a backup to a version before the RSS import, the postings will be deleted.
