Product Variations

Melody Jaimon • July 12, 2022

The Product variation allows you to define a distinct image/price/SKU/quantity/low stock notification for each option.  When this option is selected, StoreFront will always use the variation's values (for example, an image) instead of the default ones. Product options allow you to customise the product’s  size, colour, etc.

You can only use this feature if you have the Advanced Store or higher.

Product variations can be used in a lot of different ways. For instance:

  • Keep track of inventory per option (stock based on options). For example, you can sell one t-shirt in sizes "S" and "L," and then keep a separate stock of each size. So, if the "S" size is sold out, for example, your customers can still buy the "L" size. This feature will help merchants who sell clothing the most.
  • Assign different images next to your options. When a customer chooses one of the options, StoreFront will update the main image of the product. This way, your customers will be able to see right away what they're going to buy and how it looks.
  • If your options affect the price of your product (raise or lower it), you can update the price right away with the product variations feature. Your customer will be able to see the new price right away on the product details page.
  • Give each option a different weight. If you offer different packs or bundles of products, your shipping methods will yield you more accurate rates.

To configure product variations:

  1. In the panel on the left, click eCommerce.
  2. The Store Control Panel can be accessed by clicking Manage Store.
  3. Click Catalog, followed by Products.
  4. Click Edit Product beside the product which variants you wish to edit, and then click Options.
  5. Select Variations.
  6. Click the +New Variation button.

FAQs

  • Is it possible to use the same SKUs for a product and its variations?

You can set the same SKUs for a product and all of its variations in StoreFront unless the stock of a variation is different from that of the base product. In other words, if you change the in-stock amount for a variant, you must also change the SKU. We based this on the reasonable assumption that if a variation has its own inventory, it is treated as a separate, unique item, so it should have a unique SKU.

  • Will the additional SKUs be included in the product number limit for my account?

Product limits don't include SKUs from different versions of a product. If you use combinations, you can have more SKUs than your plan allows; only the number of base products is limited.
